NLMCC - Past & Present
The North London Muslim Community Centre (NLMCC) was established in 1980 primarily to serve the muslim community of Hackney. The Department of Environment provided capital funds to refurbish the 68 Cazenove Road building, and Hackney Council provided revenue funds to run a Youth Club. Since those early days the NLMCC has grown steadily to provide a range of services for all sections of the community. It is proud that it does not close its doors to anyone and for some projects has over 25% non-Muslim users. With funding from Hackney Council we provide an Advice Surgery, Youth Club, Mental Health Project and Elderly Peoples Luncheon Clubs as well as our library/reading room facilities. With Department of Education funding we offer a comprehensive UK Online Centre with broadband internet access and free training courses. With NRF and Learning Trust funding a new outreach element to this project has also be introduced. The newest addition to complement our services is the Sure Start project.
The NLMCC continues to strive in its work to serve the community. In 1999 it obtained both 66 and 68 Cazenove Road buildings and within 18 months raised funds from the Single Regeneration Budget, and Department of Education and Skill to refurbish the new building from it’s dilapidated state. It is also working at present to develop a large hall at the rear of both buildings.
