About the NLMCC Advice Surgery
The Community Advice Surgery was one of the earliest projects initiated by the NLMCC. It was recognised early in 1982 that the Muslim and Asian community of Hackney had no point of access to information and advice on their rights and entitlements, as for many English was a second language, and many could not simply understand the rules, systems and procedures of the Local Council and Central Government. Funding was requested and received from Hackney Council to employ a Community Worker to rectify this situation.
To this day the service continues to run successfully. The Centre annually meets targets set by the Local Authority for the service, and actually exceeds them by upto 80%. This is an excellent achievement for the Muslim community, in that the Local Authority receives the value for money by contracting out services to a Muslim community organisations.
