Sports For the Future - NLMCC PAYP Programme

The North London Muslim Community Centre has been awarded funds from Team Hackney to provide a 27 month youth sports programme under the “Positive Activities For Young People” (PAYP) funding scheme. The NLMCC has named this project “Sports For The Future”.

The aim of this project is to increase sports participation among Hackney’s Muslim youth (male & female) age 13-19, by providing them with a sports activity programme which focuses on Olympic sports. The sports in question will be Football, Table Tennis, 20-20 Cricket and Judo.

Drugs/Alcohol Misuse

The Drug Action Team has given us four places to have young people to take part in a Substance Misuse Volunteers Training Programme. This will consist of one week Learning and one week placement. We hope that this training will well equip the young people to go to schools and deliver peer to peer education.  We have also had two Youth consultation meetings that had representative from Drug Action Team and sub 19 delivering presentations. We have had two information stall that the DAT team distributed information for young Muslims in Hackney.

Keeping it Real - Health Awareness Program

The NLMCC is currently running a youth health awareness project called “Keeping It Real”.

Funded by Team Hackney’s ‘Large Community Grant’ and running from April 08 to March 09, the projects aim is to increase awareness in young Asian Muslims (16-25) within Hackney on how to live healthier lives and to offer opportunities for young people to learn more about healthy life choices with activities to encourage and promote better health.
